STEEL FLOWER #1 is made from a snowmobile exhaust and from diaphragm springs from manual clutches. I cut and reversed the exhaust pipe to give the stem a curved and tapering shape, As with many car parts, this exhaust pipe has a built in beauty which I believe is purely functional and only needed a slight alteration to enhance the beauty of it’s lines. Diaphragm springs are, for the most part, exquisitely beautiful forms.  Because of this beauty, I find them a little difficult to work with. I call them immaculate creations since altering their simplicity seems somewhat sacrilegious.  The painted surface on the “flower” is created by applyiing multiple layers of paint and then sanding through them to achieve a variegated look. The base is a fly wheel from an automatic transmission whose functionality anchors the work to the mechanical context from which all these parts have sprung.
